Saanich Peninsula Wine Tour
This is a fun way to visit the Saanich Peninsula with its rich farming and agricultural history. And of course the wineries. The area is ideal to cycle with modern open country roads with some designated cycling lanes. Its relatively flat, and the sun, not only adds to the magic of the grapes, but to the warmth of the day, and the surrounding scenery. In the distance the gulf islands create the back drop. The surrounding fields yield everything from seasonal daffodil farms to rows of strawberries, blueberries and lots more, which are available in the roadside stands. And of course, the vineyards. There are a many ways to explore the wineries in this area but as the days/ hours of operation differ at the different wineries, our knowledgeable guides will drop you in a preferred area with a route that will work for the day you choose. The Church and State Winery is usually our first stop. Here you would receive direction instructions to find the wineries and of course the bikes to ride: Starling Lane Winery, Dragon Fly Vineyard, and Sea Cider Vintage Cidery are all there with their own secrets and successes, waiting to be discovered. The wines vary from the locals Pinot Gris, Ortegas, Bacchus, to some fruit wines, blackberry, numerous VQA premiums, and award winners. Sea Cider has some unique brews and it’s a great place to enjoy the views and a cheese platter. The knowledgeable staff at the various establishments will be pleased to enlighten you on the fine points. Make certain to take plenty of notes, as there will sure to be questions later. Having found the best part of the day behind you its time to return on the Lochside Trail, past Mattick’s Farm and another VQA wine shop. The trip back through the Blenkinsop Valley is another relaxing photo opportunity and soon you will be riding across the Selkirk trestle to end your trip at Selkirk Station Bicycle and Kayak Shop.
